35-yr old to lead USA's $700B bailout .... bad choice??!!

35-year old Neel Kashkari is the Interim Assistant Secretary of Treasury and will be leading the US $700B bailout package.

A Wharton MBA grad, Kashkari in his previous Avatar was a NASA Engineer. Post-MBA, he was an intern at Goldman Sachs for 2 years after which Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson, invited him to work at the White House.

Though Kashkari is immensely talented, I am not sure if it is a good idea to have him lead the US out of this financial mess especially when top leaders of other countries are managing things in their country!

Visit to a Hyderabad old age home

A group I volunteer time for, called "To Make A Difference" visited an old age home in Hyderabad on Jan 1st. Here is a nice article about it, followed by a few photos.

"I had an opportunity to celebrate new year in a special way this time. we at TMAD (http://tomakeadifference.net), visited an old age home called ‘Prema Nilayam’ in Langarhouz, Hyderabad. I really did not expect that running an old age home is such a difficult thing, reeling under it’s positive portrayal in ‘Lage raho munna bhai’.There people are of well demeanour, good health, and enthusiastic towards life. But here, people are of physical, mental disorders and depressed people. That’s a film and this is the reality!!"

Maiden attempt at fairy tale

A fairy tale ...

Long, long ago, in the tallest tower of the highest peak in the middle of everywhere, there was a giant library full of books. But, this library was long deserted but for a solitary occupant, the one known only as 'The Bookworm Princess'. She spent most of her waking hours devoring book after book including volumes of Advaita Vedanta and Upanishads and the favorite Shakespearean classics.

Down below, in the everyday world, while girls of her age played the games that girls of her age play, she preferred to build a fortress of knowledge for herself that would serve her in good stead for the years to come.

One fine day, unbeknowst to her, a young man, her 'prince charming', got smitten by her after hearing tales about her. Seeking her, he started riding his steed, a buffalo, the daintiest ever seen in the world. Well, he wasn't exactly 'prince charming' as you and I know, but he was a princely one in his own right and his own charms that worked on a few.

After fighting the smelly dragon and jumping past the burping springs, many a day later, he managed to reach the peak of the mountain and at the entrance of the library, he found the bookworm princess, lost in her own world, reading her eternal favorite of Shakespeare's 'Romeo and Juliet' for the 253rd time, shedding tears of bliss reading the description about Romeo.

In that moment, she lifted her head up and her jaws dropped down, for she indeed had found her Romeo. Unable to trust her eyes, she stood up. He held her in his arms and soon they were locked in true love's first kiss. She soon sensed a weakness building up her knees as she swooned, only to be swept off her feet by the 'prince charming' and off they rode on the noble steed oops buffalo into the setting sun in the distant horizon. Legend has it that they lived happily ever after, eventhough the princess never again read a book! :)

Golden Compass: Re-discover your childhood

Last evening, Ramya and I watched Golden Compass with my sister, brother-in-law and their "almost 4 yr old" Tarun. The movie was a great watch especially with Tarun.

The premise of the movie centers around a 12-yr old Lyra, who lives in north-central Europe in a magical parallel universe where souls take shape as talking, continuously transforming animals. Lyra has gypsys for friends and plays around with them. She lives with her uncle, Lord Asriel (Daniel Craig) is a researcher who is attempting to get in touch with magical worlds in parallel universes, via a communication medium called 'Dust'. His research takes him away from home and while he is away from home, the smooth talking but evil Marisa Coulter (Nicole Kidman), asking Lyra to escort her to the North on an adventure. This adventure coupled with the disappearance of a gypsy friend, triggers an extraordinary adventure for Lyra filled with courage, fun and friendship.

The movie has a very good storyline filled with rich characters including the eagerly anticipated polar bear Iorek Byrnison (voiced by Ian McKellen). The scenes filled with action have been designed to make it gripping, being suitably supported by non-intrusive simulations.

The storyline/plot is along the lines of Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter and Chronicle of Narnia with many parts inspired by these movies. However, the inspiration is productively transformed into a different experience, making it a worthy watch.

On the negative side, Daniel Craig's character is under-developed. But, since this is a trilogy, it is likely to evolve in future episodes of the movie. Also, the director seems to have used dialogues in between action to create a context for the movie's progress. This could have used slick editing.

Nevertheless, I would strongly recommend this as a good watch, especially for those of us who are still young at heart and want to take another jab at our childhood.
